Practice Questions for Chapter 9 - CEM 251

Following are some sample mechanism questions from chapter 9. The mechanism questions will indicate how well you understand the mechanisms for a few of the reactions from chapter 9 but are not necessarily indicative of what will be on Exam 3.

Try drawing out answers to these problems and check your answers with each other and/or any of your instructors. Solutions to these problems will be available here approxdimately 1 week before the exam.

Draw and name the mechanism for the reaction between HCl and 2-methyl-2-pentanol. Refer to the mechanism to explain what type of reaction mechanism occurs and why. (S_N1 or S_N2)
Draw the mechanism for the reaction between HCl and ethanol in the presence of the Lucas Reagent. (ZnCl₂)
Draw the mechanism for the Pinacol Rearrangement between 2,3-dimethyl-2,3-butanediol and H₂SO₄.
