Matthew T. Gardner

Welcome to my home page. As you can see I have finally decided to get with the program and put together a web page. The opinions here are my own and I reserve the right to express them freely. I am a graduate student in chemistry, here at Michigan State. I plan on graduating in the spring of this year. After that I will be doing a post-doc at MIT with Professors Jeff Steinfeld and Bob Field designing strategies for detecting explosives at ultratrace levels. I currently work with Professor Jerry Babcock, doing vibrational spectroscopy on metallo- enzymes, and related model complexes. The systems studied include the oxygen evolving manganese cluster in Photosystem II, cyanide inhibited cytochrome c oxidase, ubiquinol bo oxidase, and guanylate cyclase. Click here if you want to see my CV. In my spare time I was (I am now emeritus; maybe I can finish my PhD now!) the director of a group called Science Theatre. This is a group of young scientists and scientists -in-training that are dedicated to bringing science and scientists out to the general public. Typically this means we go to schools, science-day type events, conferences and workshops and present science programs. It has been pretty successful in the past (we see 20,000 people per year) and from the looks of it we will continue to expand.

I grew up in the Boston Area. I graduated from Newton North High School in 1986. During high school, I spent most of my time doing music related activities and tormenting my dad and stepmother. I attended Haverford College, a small, liberal arts school located about 20 minutes outside of Philadelphia, PA. Then I began the journey through graduate school.
In my free time I dig backpacking, homebrewing and photography.
This is me contemplating the return to civilization after a week of backpacking on Isle Royale

This is what is probably one of the finest commercially brewed beers available in the US
