Plug-in Information

Plug-ins allow the Netscape (version 2.0 and higher) browser to display certain types of information within a web page. Many pages on this server utilize this ability. Following are sources for plug-ins which may be useful.

CHIME - follow links to ChemScape or Chime to reach the download page.
CHIME is a plug-in which allows in-line viewing of embedded molecules. It is available for Mac, Windows95, and Windows3.1 as of April 29, 1996. Download it from http://www.mdli.com/chemscape/chime/download.html or click on the heading for this section

Once you've clicked "download" you have a self-extracting archive which can't do anything other than install the plug-in you want. If you double-click on the icon, it should prompt you for other important information (such as the location of your Netscape folder if it is unable to find it). That will give you a working plug-in.

You may need to change some settings in Netscape as well so that Netscape will USE the Chime plug-in for molecules. If you have Netscape 3.0 you will have a menu titled "Options". I think this is the same in Netscape 2.0 and previous versions of Netscape can't use plug-ins. Under the "Options" menu is a heading "General Preferences". Select "General Preferences, and choose "Helpers". Scroll through the list to see if you have any phrases in the "Description" column beginning with "chemical/". If you see any, that means that the Chime installer took care of this for you. If you do not have any, select "New...". In the boxes next to "Description" and "Mime Type", enter "chemical/x-pdb". In the box next to "Extensions" enter "pdb". Then click the circle next to "Use Plug-in" and select Chime from the adjacent list. Once you have done this once, you shouldn't have to do it any more.
MOVIESTAR
MOVIESTAR is a plug-in which allows in-line viewing of QuickTime movies. It is available for Mac, Windows95, and Windows3.1 as of April 29, 1996. Download it from http://130.91.39.113/moviestar/plugins or click the heading for this section
Plug-in Index
Netscape maintains an index of Netscape plug-ins. Check out their list for others which may be of interest. http://home.netscape.com/comprod/products/navigator/version_2.0/plugins/ or click the heading for this section
